I can’t help but blog about these really interesting statics that I found while doing some research on the current state of online media. Its quite mind blowing as to what the internet is becoming, particularly social media. Not only has the online worl changed the way information is shared, even the dynamics of relationships have evolved. It continues to evolve.

There is a lot of opportunity out there for everyone if you can study and learn how to use the available tools online for your benefit.

Before you get blown away by the statistics, please do take these with a grain of salt. I got this from an Econsultancy website. It may not be very accurate but its reflective of the reality online.

Below are the online statistics.

• Facebook claims that 50% of active users log into the site each day. This would mean at least 175m users every 24 hours… A considerable increase from the previous 120m.
• Twitter now has 75m user accounts, but only around 15m are active users on a regular basis. It’s still a fair increase from the estimated 6-10m global users from a few months ago.
• LinkedIn has over 50m members worldwide. This means an increase of around 1m members month-on-month since July/August last year.
• Facebook currently has in excess of 350 million active users on global basis.Six months ago, this was 250m… meaning around a 40% increase of users in less than half a year.
• Flickr now hosts more than 4bn images. A massive jump from the previous 3.6bn I wrote about.
• More than 35m Facebook users update their status each day. This is 5m more than towards the end of July, 2009.
• Wikipedia currently has in excess of 14m articles, meaning that it’s 85,000 contributors have written nearly a million new posts in six months.
• Photo uploads to Facebook have increased by more than 100%. Currently, there are around 2.5bn uploads to the site each month – this was around a billion last time I covered this.
• There are more than 70 translations available on Facebook. Last time around, this was only 50.
• Back in 2009, the average user had 120 friends within Facebook. This is now around 130.
• Mobile is even bigger than before for Facebook, with more than 65m users accessing the site through mobile-based devices. In six months, this is over 100% increase. (Previously 30m). As before, it’s no secret that users who access Facebook through mobile devices are almost 50% more active than those who don’t.

I’m pretty excited to be here on WordPress with my own domain. Hello friends!

Right now, using WordPress seems a bit daunting – new dashboard, new controls, more features than that of blogger… I’m only learning the tech side of a lot of things. Being semi-dyslexic, I can be quite slow with technical details. With a little patience and a LOT of focus, and help from some friends, I’ll get this blog up and running.

Themes-wise, I’m yet to learn the codes and techniques for HTML or CSS. I want my blog to be ME. Later on, I would like to create a blog thats catered to giving helpful information to its readers. The blog theme? Still no idea.

There is a lot to learn but I know learning WordPress will be really helpful in the future. Its not just for blogging, you never know for what purpose this tool can be used for.

Looking forward to establishing my little place in cyberspace.

WordCamp 2009

Last Saturday, I attended my first WordCamp seminar.WordCamp is a conference/seminar focused on WordPress. It was co-presented by Mozilla and hosted by the Mindanao Bloggers Group at AIM, Makati. It was ….. interesting. First thing’s first. Sorry blogger but it seems that I may want to migrate to wordpress (oh no, bots crawling my system now. Don’t suspend my account!). That’s as much as I can say since the rest of the info was basically technical. No matter how much I tried to focus and understand, it all seemed like a blur to me. *bleary eyed* I’ll probably just ask Judd and Carlos to help me out. lol. I know, I know. I should at least have a surface understanding of it all since I work in the internet industry for crying out loud.

My favorite parts were the segments on vlogging and bloggers’ roles in the coming National Philippine Elections 2010. That’ll be a whole separate post but I really liked the points of the speaker. For those who think bloggers are just a bunch of lazy bums with nothing to do with their lives, you are starkly wrong. There is much the blogsphere can do. It gives a voice to regular people like you and me. It can be a really powerful tool.

As for vlogging (video blogs), its still at its infancy stage. Think Happy Slip and Moymoy Palaboy . Right now, most of the vlogs I’ve encountered are just about random crazy stuff that people come up with. “Productive Boredom” is what I’d call it. I’m just real curious as to how its going to evolve. Definitely, someone will come up with a socio-political vlog. That I’m very excited to see. I’d make one if I could but I just don’t have the time and resources.

What would I vlog about if I had time to vlog?

1) I’d vlog about different positive things that are happening around the metro – like GK, or concerts for a cause, organic Philippine-made products (or Philippine made products in general),some cool youth initiatives like Ako Mismo. I think the Ako Mismo people and the Juan Tama people should come up with vlogs.

2) I’d vlog about being a frustrated fashionista and a fashion disaster on the road of transformation and conversion because she’s seen “the light”. haha!

Anyway…

I think the best part of it all was meeting new people (I always like meeting people) – the Mozilla people, the Mindanao Bloggers, Jehz Lau, and the other bloggers (you know who you are). There are so many cool ideas out there. Hope to see ‘em all emerge into reality.

My Lovely Pho

I’ve been craving for Pho since Friday night. After WordCamp, the Nuffies were nice enough to agree and eat at Pho Hoa.

Its things like this that will kill television. With the internet on the rise, and the blogsphere getting ever so popular, the new celebrities are no longer just the new hottest actors/ actresses. One word. Bloggers.

Project Alpha is the first online TV show Uncovering Malaysia’s Top Bloggers. Its a look into the lives of some Malaysia’s top bloggers. People read their blogs, read their thoughts, insights, stories and follow their blogs like they would follow the lives of celebrities. But wouldn’t it be awesome to have a peak into what their lives are like outside the blogsphere. You know,see how they move, hear them talk. Basically see the faces behind the blog posts. Its a really awesome idea (TV is dead!). I wonder when we’ll be able to do something similar in the Philippines.

Check out the first episode of Project Alpha. Its on Malaysian top blogger fourfeetnine.com. She’s the girlfriend of Timothy Tiah, Nuffnang’s founder. Yes, she really is 4′9. And I thought I was short! But I do find her real cute.

So that’s episode one. I’m actually pretty excited about episode two and the episodes on the other bloggers.

If all goes well here in Manila, I’ll get to meet fourfeetnine (real name: Audrey), Jojo Styrus (the host), Timothy Tiah, and the rest of the Malaysian “celebrity” bloggers this October. Not to mention, some of the Filipino celebrity bloggers and top bloggers.

Keeping fingers crossed!

I’m currently exploring Flock, the browser which is social network and blogging friendly, as they claim it is. I’m yet to see if this is so but since this was suggested to me by top tech blogger Abe, I trust its good.

Ok I’m not good at “techie-speak” but Flock is supposed to do the ff:

• For pictures, its supposed to help you post photos to flickr, photobucket, facebook and other supported photo sharing sites.. all in one go.

• Same banana for blogs

• Help you monitor updates on Facebook, twitter, gmail, yahoo mail, feeds on blogs and websites.. without having to access those websites one by one. There are side bars in place that indicate if there there are any unread updates/feeds.

All that and more.

If I find that it works well and helps me get my online business done faster in a more organized manner, then this is just what the doctor has ordered. I’ve been looking for some kind of website or application that can help me manage all my online social activity – facebook, pictures, blogging, twitter, etc etc etc. It gets quite confusing having to organize all this info online.

Let’s see how this goes.
